Golden Shores Texture Painting: 12 Painters, One Studio Afternoon

Twelve painters working on textured shoreline canvases at the Master Artist Golden Shores workshop

On Sunday, 4 October, 12 painters joined our Golden Shores texture painting workshop at the Master Artist studio in Desa Sri Hartamas. Led by founder Sabrina Hew and art teacher Cheong Chui Yen, the session ran from 3pm to 5pm, and every painter — beginners included — left with their own textured shoreline canvas.

Meet the teachers: Sabrina Hew and Cheong Chui Yen

Golden Shores was guided start to finish by Master Artist's own Sabrina Hew and Cheong Chui Yen, who walked the room step by step — building up a layered sky and sea in blue, then a textured, sandy shoreline with a palette knife. No painting experience was assumed, and with two teachers in the room, everyone got hands-on help exactly when they needed it.

What we made

This was a hands-on, beginner-friendly session, guided step by step from a blank canvas to a finished piece:

  • Laying in the sky and sea — blending blues with a brush for a soft, graduated horizon.
  • Building the shoreline — working thick paint with a palette knife for real, tactile texture where the \"waves\" meet the \"sand\".
  • Finishing touches — adding foam, shell-like highlights and texture detail to each painter's own coastline.

Why texture painting works for all ages

Working with a palette knife rather than a brush takes the pressure off needing a steady hand — the thicker, textured strokes are forgiving, and the technique looks striking even on a first try. That makes it a natural fit for a room where complete beginners and more confident painters sit side by side.

It was also, true to Master Artist's workshops generally, as much about the room as the canvas: the studio tables were decorated for the afternoon, and painters chatted with their neighbours between layers — a relaxed couple of hours where people who'd never met left having gotten to know each other a little.
