Piano or Vocal Lessons for Kids near Mont Kiara

A student playing the piano during a lesson at Master Artist

For a child of five or older near Mont Kiara, the useful choice is usually voice or piano, not “music” in general. At Master Artist both start at age 5. Voice is taught one to one by founder Sabrina Hew. Piano and other instruments are taught in a private soundproof room, with music theory once a student reaches the advanced stage. Each is RM400 a month for four weekly lessons. A RM50 trial, credited in full to the first month if you enrol, is how you find out which one your child will actually practise.

This guide is for parents comparing those two paths. Fees below are the September 2026 prices on our pricing page, not a separate list.

Where the lessons are, if you live near Mont Kiara

The studio is at 38-2, Jalan 28/70A, Desa Sri Hartamas, 50480 Kuala Lumpur, upstairs above Savor. Hartamas is a short drive from Mont Kiara, which is why most of our music families come from one or the other. Lessons are arranged with the teacher, one to one or in a group, depending on who is free. They are not a single after-school slot you have to take or leave.

We are open Sunday to Thursday, 10:30am to 9pm, and Friday, 10:30am to 5:30pm. The studio is closed on Saturday. If you are coming for a trial, weekday late afternoon and early evening are when school-age children usually come. The full address, map and opening hours are on the visit page.

Choose voice if your child already sings

Voice lessons are for children who sing along at home, in the car, or at school, and for children who are shy about it and want a room where that is the whole point. Sabrina Hew, the founder, teaches the lesson herself. A class is 60 minutes, once a week, in a private room. The work is breath, pitch, tone and the confidence to stand up and sing, not a copy of someone else’s recording.

Voice with Sabrina is RM400 a month, which is RM100 a lesson, for ages 5 through to adult. If two or more students want to learn together, Group Voice is RM340 a month per person (RM85 a lesson). That suits siblings, or two friends who will actually turn up together. It is still a proper lesson, not a choir rehearsal. The Mont Kiara Orchestra, on Fridays from 4pm to 5:30pm, is a separate ensemble for people who already play; it is not a substitute for a first singing lesson.

A child does not need to read music before the first voice trial. They do need to be able to stay in the room and try a sound more than once. Five is our starting age because that is when most children can do that for a full lesson. Older beginners are welcome, including teenagers who only sing with headphones on.

Choose piano if they want an instrument in their hands

Piano and instrument lessons are for children who want to play, not only to sing. The same RM400 a month (RM100 a lesson) covers piano and the other instruments we teach, including violin, in a private room for 60 minutes a week. Ages run from 5 to adult. There are no exams. The point is playing, creating and composing, at the student’s own pace.

Lessons move through three stages so a beginner is not handed a hard piece in week two. Beginners learn note-reading, hand position and simple pieces. Intermediate students work on technique, sight-reading and longer music. Advanced students play performance-level pieces and go further into music theory and expression. Theory is part of the advanced stage, not a separate class you have to add on. Taking away the exam does not take away reading or technique. It takes away a single test day.

Pick piano if your child heads for any keyboard in the house, likes puzzles, or wants something they can play alone after the lesson. Pick voice if the interest is songs, words and performing. A few children want both. A second programme is 15% off, so you do not have to decide forever on the first afternoon. You can also start with one, and add the other in a later term.

What the RM50 trial is, and what it is not

Any of these classes can be tried for RM50. If you enrol afterwards, that RM50 is credited in full against the first month, so the trial is not an extra fee on top. There is no deposit, and materials for the trial are provided. Parents are welcome to sit in. Nothing about the lesson is meant to happen behind a closed door.

The trial is one lesson, not a promise of a particular weekday. Music times are booked around the teacher’s existing students. Say which days you can do when you write to us, and avoid Saturday: the studio is shut. Registration, if you continue, is RM100 per family, once. The first fifty students — the Founding 50 — register free and get their first month at half price, with that rate protected for 12 months. A brother or sister is 15% off, and prepaying a full term is 10% off. Those discounts are on the pricing page; they are the same numbers wherever you read them.

Adults who want a morning lesson, rather than a slot shared with the children’s timetable, take Adult Voice & Piano at RM480 a month (RM120 a lesson), one to one. That is a different fee from the RM400 children’s and all-ages voice and piano lessons. If you are booking for a child, you want the RM400 rate, or RM340 for Group Voice.

A simple way to decide this month

Listen for a week before you book. If your child sings when they think nobody is scoring them, book the voice trial with Sabrina. If they ask to play, or they already poke at a piano, book piano. If you truly cannot tell, book the one they will agree to attend without a battle. A willing student in the “wrong” lesson learns more than a reluctant student in the theoretically perfect one.

You do not need an instrument at home before the trial. If you continue with piano, we will tell you what is useful to have at home after you have enrolled, not before. For voice, the instrument is the child. What helps at home is a few quiet minutes to sing the thing they learned, not an app and not an exam book.

PBS KIDS for Parents makes a similar point for younger children: singing, clapping and playing with music at home are enough before formal lessons. Our own line is the same. We start structured voice and piano at 5, and we would rather a child arrive curious than “prepared”.

Frequently asked questions

What age can my child start piano or singing near Mont Kiara?

Both voice and piano at Master Artist start at age 5 and continue through to adult. Under 5, singing and clapping at home are the right preparation; our lessons begin at 5.

Will my child have to sit piano exams?

No. Piano and instrument lessons are taught without exams on purpose. Students still learn to read music, and advanced students study theory. The lesson time goes into playing, not into a grade syllabus.

Is Group Voice cheaper, and is it worse?

Group Voice is RM340 a month per person instead of RM400, for two or more students together. It is the right choice when the children will support each other. It is the wrong choice if one child needs the whole hour alone. The trial will show you which.

Can we try a class before paying a month?

Yes. The trial is RM50, credited in full to the first month if you enrol. Book it from the trial form or message the studio on WhatsApp. We are closed on Saturdays.

Bring your child once, to the lesson that matches what they already do at home. You will know more after that hour than after another week of comparing schools online. Voice and piano trials are both open, at the same RM50, at 38-2, Jalan 28/70A, Desa Sri Hartamas.
